Mutah University

A Royal Decree by the Late HM King Hussein to support research and development in the southern region of Jordan established Mu’tah University in 1981. “The location of Mutah University in the southern part of Jordan, the less developed part of the country, is meant to serve as a source of enlightenment, modernization and development of this region. In 1986, the Council of Higher Education decided that a civilian wing be established at Mutah University to respond to the needs of the local community in particular and the country's needs in terms of: a- Creating opportunities for higher education, improving its quality, and promoting its level. b-Providing the country with specialists in the fields of science, technology, arts, and fine arts to meet future challenges. c- Deepening the students' national loyalty as well as developing their talents and emphasizing traits of leadership and productive citizenship. d- Encouraging scientific research, especially that which is necessary for the industries in the southern part of the country. Now the civilian wing comprises, in addition to the Deanship of Research and Higher Studies, twelve academic faculties. (Arts, Science, Engineering, Shari’ah (Islamic Studies), Law, Education, Agriculture, Sports Sciences, Nursing, Medicine, Social Sciences, Business Administration). Moreover, MU has established several research centers in the fields of environment, water, Dead Sea and Energy studies, beside the South Studies center for community development. MU now has several signed agreements with many international universities and organizations such as DAAD and JICA. Recently MU has been chosen as a centre of excellence in Environmental and water education, research and innovation with Braunschweig University/Germany. Also MU has won one of Tempus project together with Balqa Applied University (BAU) in the field of desalination. MU has achieved many stages in the implementation of the eLearning process. Many staff members of MU have received world prizes and international grants for their excellent achievements in scientific and technological fields.
