The Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (BRSU) is a young university, founded in 1995, with more than 5,600 students, approximately 131 professors and 156 research associates. The University campus is located in Hennef, Rheinbach and Sankt Augustin. In Bonn, BRSU runs the B-IT Institute of the Bonn-Aachen In-ternational Center for Information Technology jointly with Bonn University and Aachen Technical University (RWTH).
Internationalisation, innovation, sustainability and excellence are the exigencies of the recently published target plan (2010-2015) of BRSU. It articulates explicitly the important role of internationalization: “The qualification of students for the increasingly competitive national and international job market and the measurable demographic development require a reinforcement of internationalisation efforts” and furthermore: “The most important objective is to increase the number of students going abroad as well as the number and diversity of in-ternational incoming students”.
BRSU cooperates with approximately 50 foreign universities in about 30 countries. In 2009, the proportion of international students enrolled at BRSU was roughly 12 %. The internationalisation strategy focuses on the co-operation with higher education and research institutions as well as industry with selected developing and emerging countries also in the Arab region.
BRSU holds the chair of the IT Network of the German-Jordanian-University (GJU) in Amman that is constantly reviewing Computer Science and Engineering curricula at the Jordanian university which implies a continual exchange of staff students from BRSU to Jordan and vice versa. In this capacity BRSU is mainly involved in curriculum development at bilateral German universities like GJU. In 2006 BRSU has been assigned the lead to a Tempus project with the GJU comprising mutual student and faculty mobility incl. a very successful Summer School initiative of European students in Amman. Based on an EU funded initiative we acquired extensive experience in selecting and hosting international students in particular from Arab countries.
In parallel BRSU has been very active in the development of innovative internationally oriented study and training programs like e.g. NGO Management (MBA) and International Media Studies (M.A.) that are designed to provide innovative education with a strong impetus on the international profile of the university and its graduates as well as to attract talented international students. Some of these study programs have been implemented also at universities in Jordan, Pakistan, Vietnam and Turkey.
A number of excellence rankings and achievement awards, above all the feedback we receive from satisfied students and alumni, prove that BRSU is already one of the top universities in many respects.
